Commercial Structure Fire in Monterey Considered Suspicious

Monterey, Calif. – Monterey Fire Department responded to a commercial structure fire at 11:11 p.m. on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at 591 East Franklin Street. On arrival, fire crews found a fully involved dumpster that spread to the structure. Crews quickly knocked down the dumpster fire, and the fire that had extended to the exterior of the structure containing the fire and keeping the fire from further spreading. The structure sustained minor fire and structural damage. The Monterey Police Department, CAL FIRE and American Medical Response (AMR) assisted. 

A total of 16 firefighters responded to this incident. No injuries were reported. This was the second trash fire of the night. The first one was a garbage can on fire at Trader Joe’s, 570 Munras Avenue in Monterey. 

The cause of the fire is under investigation and is considered suspicious. The Monterey Police Department is investigating. Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact Monterey Police Sergeant Greg Galin (831) 646-3830, or to remain anonymous call (831) 646-3840.
