Facility Feasibility Study

The Monterey Public Library has reached the capacity of its existing space as currently configured.

The Library's unique local history collection and archives have outgrown the climate-controlled space allotted in the California History Room, and the number of young adults that visit the library after school far exceeds the Teen Zone's capacity. In 2019, the City of Monterey embarking on a feasibility study to develop short-term recommendations as well as a long-term plan for the library.

41The project created a community-based renovation, remodel, and expansion plan for the library to meet community needs now and for the next 20 years. The project’s consultants, Group 4 Architecture, Research + Planning worked with Library and City staff, City Council, Library Board members, and community representatives to inform and refine recommendations. The plan was presented to the Monterey City Council in October 2020, and sets the direction for library expansion and renovation in the future.
