The City of Monterey is committed to supporting and promoting alternative modes of transportation by building a safe and welcoming environment for bicyclists and pedestrians. The City successfully pursued a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to launch ‘Walk & Bike Safe in Monterey’ – and interactive public education program focusing on educating children and seniors as safe pedestrians and bicyclists. This educational initiative complements enforcement and street design efforts. The City hosted over 20 educational events as part of the program, including classroom presentations, pedestrian and bicycle rodeos, and educational booths at community events and schools. Over 700 bike helmets, thousands of coloring books, bike reflectors, bike lights and reflective snap bracelets were also distributed. The program provides valuable safety education by addressing traffic rules, rights and responsibilities of all road users and encouraging residents and visitors to watch out for each other (whether on foot, bike, or car).
