Van Buren Senior Housing

Update, March 9, 2017: The Van Buren Senior Housing Apartment Project, an apartment project for extremely low, very low and low-income seniors, will require the removal of three buildings at 637, 651 and 669 Van Buren Street and the removal of 26 parking spaces that are currently accessed from the El Cuartel parking lot. Work to prepare the buildings for demolition is anticipated to begin March 13, 2017. Construction of the project is expected to take 10 to 12 months.
During construction of the project, it is expected that the availability of some on-street parking spaces in the 600 Block of Van Buren Street will be limited. The Van Buren Senior Housing Project is being developed on City owned land and will provide 18 brand new, very much needed affordable rental housing units for seniors.
Background

The property contains a portion of a City parking lot and three single-family dwellings (one currently being used as a City office), which have been determined to have no historic value and will be demolished. The project area is bounded by Van Buren Street to the west; the Monterey City Hall Annex to the east; Madison Street to the north; and a residence and the Monterey High School parcel to the south in the City of Monterey. The design process will involve the surrounding residential neighborhood to ensure that the resulting design is compatible with the neighborhood.
