Welcome to the Planning Office. Planning staff is committed to excellent customer service. Our goal is to make information accessible to the public and to make our permitting process as user-friendly as possible.
We focus our priorities on projects that will achieve the City Council-adopted Vision, Value Drivers and Strategic Initiatives.
Planning staff is constantly developing and sharpening a variety of planning tools to help clarify land use regulations, stimulate economic development, and ensure preservation of the City's neighborhood character and historic resources. If you want more information, please give us a call.

Notice of Intent to Adopt a Mitigated Negative Declaration | Initial Study
Advertising of short term residential rentals is prohibited in Monterey neighborhoods. Enforcement of Monterey City Code (MCC), Section § 22-19.5 "Advertisement of short-term rentals" ordinance is in effect. You can report addresses that are potentially in violation. The City of Monterey is working with Host Compliance, a leading provider of short-term rental compliance monitoring and enforcement solutions for local governments. Host Compliance offers two ways you can report addresses that are potentially in violation: a short term rental telephone hotline - 435-STR-HELP (787-7357) - and an online form to submit your complaint - https://hostcompliance.com/tips. Both reporting options are available 24 hours a day/seven days a week for neighbors to report non-emergency problems related to short-term rental properties.
This information is also available on the Code Compliance web page at https://www.monterey.org/Services/Planning/Code-Compliance.
