Green Building Program |

Following the
signing of the Mayors Climate Protection
Agreement and the U.N. Urban Environmental
Accords last June, the City of Monterey Building
Department began a
community process to establish a
Green Building
Program aimed at reducing the environmental
footprint of our built environment. The
Department of Building and Safety coordinated
the effort through an interdepartmental Task
Force and a series of Town Hall meetings to
ensure a successful program which will serve as
a model for the Central Coast. City staff has
been very pleased at the level of interest and
participation from the public, offering
much-needed input and feedback throughout the
process. On July 1, City Council unanimously
passed the proposed
Green Building Ordinance.
The Ordinance will take effect August 2009.
What does Green
Building mean for your construction projects?
The proposed Green Building Ordinance is
designed to ensure a minimum level of green
building practices for all future new
construction and remodel projects. Rather than
dictate which measures a project will need to
incorporate, the program will rely on
industry-accepted checklists that offer a wide
range of options of green building practices.
The checklists themselves will serve as an
educational tool, alerting projects to potential
green building options that do not necessarily
need to bring additional costs. In fact, many
options are designed to save money over the full
life cycle of the project.
