The City of Monterey Recreation and Community Services Department sponsors the Monterey Community Band. The band's director is Richard Robins. The Monterey Community Band operates from late August through July. Membership in the Community Band is open to all musicians aged 18 years old or older. Band members must have their own instrument and be capable of sight reading. There is no charge for membership in the Band. We normally rehearse on Monday evenings in Monterey High School band room. These rehearsals start promptly at 7:00pm and typically last until 9:30pm. We also rehearse at the Hilltop Recreational Center whenever the Monterey High School is in recess. The rehearsals the Hilltop Recreational Center typically run from 6:45pm to 8:45pm. We occasionally have sectional rehearsals for the first half hour of a rehearsal, as required. We always welcome new members and currently have need for clarinets, percussion, and flutes. We perform two major concerts each year, one in December and the other in late spring, both on a Sunday afternoon. We perform these concerts in the Music Hall at the Monterey Peninsula College. We also perform short concerts in the spring and the fall on the plaza in front of the Monterey Maritime Museum. These concerts are on Saturday afternoons. We also perform an outdoor concert for the Monterey Christmas tree lighting ceremony at Colton Hall in the evening of the first Friday in December, along the course for the Big Sur Marathon on the the last Sunday in April, in downtown Monterey on July 4th (in the morning and early afternoon), at the Sloat Landing site in July, and at the Monterey Pier for Armed Forces Day.
