Below are five simple steps to reduce unwanted mail or solicitations:
  1. Stop Junk Mail Now!Reduce Credit Card Offers – start by opt-in or out of receiving credit offers. Contact the three major credit bureaus at 1-888-5-OPTOUT (567-8688) for more information. When you call, you will need to provide your home telephone number, name, and Social Security number. The information you provide is confidential and will be used only to process your request to opt out of receiving pre-screened offers of credit.
  2. Keep Personal Information Private – request personal information not to be shared when signing up on mailing lists, making donations, or when shopping at stores or online.
  3. Unsubscribe – contact companies directly to unsubscribe (e.g. unwanted catalogues, phone books, charities).
  4. Reuse – share catalogs with roommates, family members, neighbors and friends. You can also use shredded paper as composting material!
  5. Register for Mail Preference Service – visit the Direct Marketing Association, dmaaction.org/, to register for the Mail Preference Service and have your name removed from general mailing lists.
These easy steps can go a long way to preserve our natural resources, by not only saving trees but also by reducing the need for landfill space.
How to get removed from junk mail lists
Below are listings of websites and companies to contact to reduce the amount of "junk mail" you receive. Request your name to be taken off of their mailing lists! Send a postcard/letter requesting that they stop sending junk be sure to include your name, address and request to "activate the preference service". This will stop junk mail from these companies for up to five years. Your name will be put on a "delete" file that is updated and made available to direct-mail and telephone marketers. Two to three months after your name is entered into file, solicitations you receive should decrease.
Unwanted Magazines: Look up the 800 number and ask them to take you off of their list.
Credit Solicitations: 1-888-567-8688 or 1-888-5OPTOUT. This will remove you from junk mail sent by Trans Union, Equifax, Innovis, Experian.
