02/12/2016: Citywide Sewer Repairs Begin in Monterey

The City of Monterey will begin repairing and replacing its aging sewer system next week. The citywide project will rehabilitate seven miles of sewer pipes and more than 500 sewer manholes located in streets and easements throughout the City. A rehabilitated sewer system will prevent sewer leaks and spills that could harm our quality of life, local economy and the pristine waters of the Monterey Bay.

On the recommendation of the Monterey County Health Department, the City of Monterey has closed McAbee Beach as a safety precaution because a small amount of a petroleum-like substance has leaked in the area. The City will have the material tested to determine what it is. Staff is trying to determine the source of the leak and stop it. At this time, the leak is minor, confined to the remnants of a cement foundation of a former building on the beach. The beach will remain closed until further notice.

The City of Monterey is actively looking for solutions to deal with the recent closure of six California Redemption Value (CRV) centers in north Monterey County. These small centers provide state-mandated CRV refunds to people who recycle plastic, glass, metal and other beverage containers with “CA CRV” or “CA CASH REFUND” written on them. Consumers pay $.05 - .25 per container on CRV purchases, and these monies go into a state fund that pays back consumers when they return the bottles to a redemption center.
