SAFETY TIPS FOR WINTER TRAVEL:
BE BRIGHT. BE SEEN. BE SAFE.
Monterey, CA. – With shorter periods of daylight during winter, longer hours of darkness make visibility a top priority for traffic safety.

It’s important to increase your visibility and to take extra care when on the road whether you’re out and about on foot, bike, or car. Remember – the more visible, the safer you are.

To support this effort, the City of Monterey Transportation Engineering Division wants to share the following safety tips:
  • Pedestrians – help drivers see you by wearing reflective gear or light colored clothing. Better visibility equals greater safety.
  • Bicyclists –help drivers see you by wearing reflective clothing or flashing accessories. Remember, if you cycle at night you must have a white front light and a red rear reflector.
  • Drivers –stay attentive and watch your speed and following distance, streets might be slippery! You are less likely to see vulnerable road users in the dark. Pay extra attention for pedestrians and bicyclists who are out and about.
Follow these safety tips to help Monterey stay safe and enjoy the holidays!

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
