In light of the tragic fire at a local pet grooming and boarding facility, the Monterey Fire Department encourages all pet care facilities in the communities it serves to assess their fire and smoke alarm systems and fire suppression capabilities. Although these systems may not be required in older buildings, there are inexpensive smoke and fire detectors that can be installed in key areas of a building or home.

The Insurance Services Office (ISO), which ranks communities’ fire protection services for insurance companies, has raised the ratings for areas served by the Monterey Fire Department. Improved ratings may lead to lower insurance rates for customers in a community because of reduced risks.

Division Chief Stewart Roth of the Monterey Fire Department has successfully completed the process that awards him the professional designation of "Chief Training Officer" (CTO). The Commission on Professional Credentialing (CPC) met on February 10, 2015, to officially confer the designation upon Chief Roth. Chief Roth is one of only 63 CTOs worldwide.

The Monterey Firefighters Association played host to 25 children from the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation’s 5th Annual Aquarium Sleep Over. The children, many of whom were severely injured by burns, enjoyed dinner, toured the fire truck, fire engine, fire boat, and the United States Coast Guard 47 foot Motor Life Boat.
