The City Clerk, as the City's Elections Official, conducts all regular and special elections, including processing and certifying citizen-generated petitions, and is the point of contact for keeping candidates, the public, and staff informed during the election process.  On this page you will find information on the following subjects:

NOVEMBER 5, 2024 GENERAL MUNICIPAL ELECTION

Offices on the Ballot

On November 5, 2024, the voters of the City of Monterey will elect:
  • one Mayor on an at-large basis (representing the entire City) for a term of 2 years
  • one Councilmember representing District 3 (map will open as PDF)*, for a term of 4 years
  • one Councilmember representing District 4 (map will open as PDF)*, for a term of 4 years

Running for Office

  • Nomination Period: The nomination period for the above seats will open July 15, 2024 at 8:00 a.m. and close August 9, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. The City Clerk's Office is open 8 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1 p.m.-5 p.m. by appointment only.  Please check back closer to the nomination period to schedule appointments to receive and file nomination papers.
  • Filing Deadline:  The filing deadline is August 9, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. This deadline will be extended to August 14, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. for any seat for which nomination papers for an incumbent are not filed by the August 9, 2024 filing deadline. This extension period is not applicable to incumbents.
  • Qualification for the Ballot:  A candidate does not qualify for the ballot until nomination papers have been filed timely with the City Clerk and the voters' nomination signatures obtained have been verified as sufficient by Monterey County Elections.

VOTER REGISTRATION
  • Register to vote online at the CA Secretary of State's voter registration website.   Did you know? A 16- or 17-year-old can pre-register to vote and become automatically registered on their 18th birthday.
  • Paper voter registration forms can be found at most libraries and post offices, or requested by calling Monterey County Elections (phone number below).
  • Check your voter registration status online at the Secretary of State's voter registration status website, or by calling Monterey County Elections at (phone number below).
  • The registration deadline for the November 5, 2024 election is Monday, October 21, 2024, but if you miss the deadline, California provides the opportunity for same-day registration and voting. Please see the CA Secretary of State's same day conditional voter registration page for more information.

SIGNS
No private party signs may be mounted, erected, maintained, or displayed on City of Monterey property or in the right-of-way except as authorized in Table 31-1 of Chapter 31 of the Monterey City Code.
