Downtown Monterey Cleared and Open

Monterey, CA. – Downtown Monterey is now open following an attempted robbery at the Bank of America and related bomb threat.

A suspect is in custody and being interviewed by police. The Monterey County Bomb Squad investigated and detonated two suspicious packages at Munras and Webster and Pearl and Washington streets. All downtown areas are now clear and open.

The suspect’s vehicle was inspected in the Calle Principal Parking Garage. No suspicious items were found. The garage was cleared and is now being reopened.

The City of Monterey appreciates the assistance of the California Highway Patrol, Monterey County Sheriff’s Department, and Seaside and Marina Police Departments, and the cooperation of citizens, visitors, and businesses during this incident.

Downtown Area Secured after Robbery and Bomb Threat - UPDATED 4:17 p.m.

Monterey, CA. – Following an attempted bank robbery in downtown Monterey, the downtown area is now secured. The suspect is in custody and being interviewed by police. The suspect’s vehicle is also under investigation, in the Calle Principal Garage. Traffic from the downtown area has been diverted away from the incident area. Area businesses have been evacuated.

The Monterey County Bomb Squad is onsite and managing the situation. The bomb squad has detonated the suspicious package at Pearl and Washington; the contents are undergoing inspection.

Members of the public are being asked to stay away from the downtown area at this time.

UPDATE 3:30 pm:

The area around Washington and Pearl has been cleared and is open. The bomb squad is now at Munras and Webster, investigating a suspicious package at that location.

The cities of Marina and Seaside are providing assistance in securing the area around the Calle Principal garage.

UPDATE 3:55 pm:

A second suspicious package at Munras and Webster was detonated. This area will shortly be cleared and open.

Bomb squad is en route to Calle Principle Garage to investigate suspect’s vehicle. Franklin Street is closed at Pacific until further notice.

UPDATE 4:17 pm:

The original seven-block evacuation area is now cleared and open, except for Calle Principal and Pacific, and Munras between Tyler and Pearl.

Bomb Threat in Downtown Monterey

Munras, Webster, Pearl, Washington Streets and other Downtown Areas Evacuated

On 9-26-13 at approximately 1247 hours, Monterey Police Department responded to a robbery at the Bank of America located at 200 East Franklin. Officers subsequently located and took a suspect into custody at Munras and Webster. A suspicious device was found and isolated at that location. A second suspicious device was subsequently located in the area of Pearl and Washington. Businesses and streets surrounding the area of those two intersections have been closed and evacuated pending response from the bomb squad. At this point the investigation is ongoing.

With funding from the California Energy Commission and the Monterey Bay Unified Air Pollution Control District as the lead Sponsoring agency, Ecology Action will be hosting 3 workshops for the tri-county region of Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Benito to gather public input on our regional Electric Vehicle Readiness Plan.

The Monterey County EV Readiness Plan Workshop will be held on September 11 from 6-7:30pm at Casanova Oak Knoll Park Community Center in Monterey.
