01/13/2017: Dennis the Menace Playground Will Close for Upgrades Beginning January 23

Dennis the Menace Playground at the Lake El Estero Park Complex in Monterey will close for sidewalk upgrades beginning Monday, January 23rd.  The playground is planned to re-open by the beginning of spring break, Saturday, March 18th, although weather impacts may affect the re-opening date.

01/04/2017: Monterey Fire Adding Nine New Fire Recruits - Partially Funded by FEMA SAFER Grant

The Monterey Fire Department is adding new members to its ranks. Nine firefighter recruits will start an academy on January 9, 2017, to fill existing vacancies and several added positions. This group represents some significant achievements for the Department as it is the largest and most diverse group of Firefighter Recruits ever hired by the City of Monterey. “I am proud of the fact that we were able to find a highly qualified group of recruits,” said Chief Panholzer.

12/14/2016: $4.4 Million Grant Awarded to Monterey/Pacific Grove Joint Storm Water Project

A joint Area of Special Biological Significance (ASBS) Project ($8.9 million) developed by City of Pacific Grove (PG) and Monterey staff has been awarded a Proposition 1 Implementation Grant in the amount of $4.4 million, with Pacific Grove as the lead agency, and Monterey as a Project partner.

The Presidio Municipal Services Agency (PMSA), a partnership between the City of Monterey and the Presidio of Monterey, was awarded the Army Community Partnership Award from the U.S. Army. On December 6, Colonel Lawrence Brown, Garrison Commander of the Presidio of Monterey, Deputy City Manager Dino Pick and PMSA staff attended an awards ceremony at the Pentagon, hosted by Under Secretary of the Army Patrick Murphy.

  • MEASURE P STREETS: Citywide Street Resurfacing/Slurry Phase 5 - The slurry resurfacing portion of work (this phase creates the most impact) is scheduled for October 6 through October 20 for all areas shown on the map. Work continues to get the streets ready for the slurry. Next week this phase of work will finish in the Oak Grove neighborhood. MAP OF STREETS - SEE SPECIAL NOTICE FOR MORE DETAILS
  • MEASURE P: ADA Ramp and Street Reconstruction Phase 4 - Pacific Street Exit from Lighthouse Avenue closed - SEE NEWS RELEASE FOR DETAILS This work also closes Artillery Street. Drivers will need to use Bolio Road.
    - El Dorado Street between Major Sherman Road and Alta Mesa. Paving work is completed; median work still to complete.
    - Littlefield Road work scheduled Mon. through Thu. - (Measure P)
  • Lower Presidio Historic Park Accessible Walkway up to the Sloat Monument (NIP) - estimated completion date is Nov. 6.
  • Cal Am Monterey Pipeline Project (Non-City Project) - also see www.watersupplyproject.org/
    Crews will be back at the intersection of Pacific and Madison in downtown. Night-work at this intersection -- between the hours of 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. -- is expected to begin on Sunday, October 1st. A second crew will continue pipeline construction in New Monterey on Spencer Street.
