03/20/2017: Monterey Homicide Suspect Arrested

On November 23, 2016, Raul Melendez was the victim of a shooting homicide that occurred in the 600 block of Wave Street in Monterey. The Monterey Police Department (MPD) assisted by the Peninsula Regional Violence and Narcotics Team (PRVNT) identified the suspect in this homicide as Jorge Luis Mendoza and a warrant was obtained for his arrest.

The Van Buren Senior Affordable Housing Project’s developer, MidPen, began demolition last week with removal of the buildings beginning today. The project is being developed on City owned property and will provide 18 brand new, very much needed affordable rental housing units for extremely low, very low and low-income seniors.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the City of Monterey invites sealed bids for furnishing the following project:  Sanitary Sewer System Rehabilitation Package 3 & 5:  D and F Rated Pipe Rehabilitation Package 6: Manhole Rehabilitation, Phase II.  In general, the work consists of the rehabilitation of portions of the existing sanitary sewer system pipelines and structures.  The work includes, but is not limited to, sewer cleaning and CCTV inspection; pipeline rehabilitation via spot repairs, cured-in-place pipe (CIPP), sliplining, pipe bursting and open cut; lateral reinstatement, raising buried manholes and cleanouts, rehabilitating, reconstructing and installing new manholes and cleanouts, and the removal and replacement of existing improvements, including concrete and HMA (AC) pavement and traffic detector loops, as well as other sewer related work as shown in the project plans and specifications.

03/07/2017: Monterey Fire to Re-Establish Fire Prevention Inspection Program in Pacific Grove

The Monterey Fire Department is resuming conducting fire prevention inspections in the City of Pacific Grove. The Department has recently hired three part -time inspectors to assist with this effort. Inspections will be conducted at multi -family residential buildings, schools, care facilities, and businesses. Emphasis will initially be on the residential buildings as those pose the greatest risk to the safety of people.

The Monterey Police Department has received a grant from the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) to conduct Minor Decoy operations, Shoulder Tap Programs, and Informed Merchants Preventing Alcohol-Related Crime Tendencies (IMPACT) Inspections of ABC licensed businesses.

Challenge Coin Presentation to the Old Monterey Foundation

City Manager Mike McCarthy and Assistant City Manager Hans Uslar present Challenge Coins to Old Monterey Foundation's Bill McCrone and Frank Sollecito for their contributions to the Monterey community. The coins were presented in front of the new Lower Presidio Historic Park sign, designed and made possible by the Old Monterey Foundation and the Rotary Club. The Challenge Coin is a symbol of appreciation given to members of the community who have made a positive impact for the benefit of residents, businesses and visitors.

  • Highway 68/Highway 1 Roundabout (monterey.org/hh68) Night Work Sunday April 23 During the next stage of construction, additional congestion is expected in the eastbound direction along Holman Highway 68 because there will not be a dedicated right turn lane towards the southbound Highway 1 on-ramp. Also starting on Monday at 6 a.m., there will be no left turn out of the Pebble Beach Highway 1 Gate for approximately 5 weeks. This no left turn restriction will be in place 24 hours a day for the 5 week period. Here's what you need to know for entering and leaving Pebble Beach during the 5 week left turn restriction:
    - Highway 1 gate exit will be right turn only
    - Highway 1 gate entrance will remain fully open
    - To get to northbound Hwy 1 or westbound Holman Hwy 68, all drivers will need to use another gate, or the detour route.
