01/13/2017: Dennis the Menace Playground Will Close for Upgrades Beginning January 23

Dennis the Menace Playground at the Lake El Estero Park Complex in Monterey will close for sidewalk upgrades beginning Monday, January 23rd.  The playground is planned to re-open by the beginning of spring break, Saturday, March 18th, although weather impacts may affect the re-opening date.

Thanks to Public Works crews for taking care of Monterey during the storms

Thank you Monterey Parks & Forestry and Streets crews for responding to storm impacts! Crews mobilized to clear 40+ tree calls in 5 days, and are busy clearing mud and debris from storm drain system and streets.

Lake El Estero had to be lowered six times in the past week. How do they do that? Fleet and Streets Operations Manager Bret Johnson explains, "We have two large diesel engines that power two large pumps that are in an underground pump room. We monitor the weather and if a rain event is imminent, then we will pump the lake down accordingly. During off hours if the lake level reaches 7' 6" an alarm is sent to the alarm company and they notify our crews that are on standby."

01/04/2017: Monterey Fire Adding Nine New Fire Recruits - Partially Funded by FEMA SAFER Grant

The Monterey Fire Department is adding new members to its ranks. Nine firefighter recruits will start an academy on January 9, 2017, to fill existing vacancies and several added positions. This group represents some significant achievements for the Department as it is the largest and most diverse group of Firefighter Recruits ever hired by the City of Monterey. “I am proud of the fact that we were able to find a highly qualified group of recruits,” said Chief Panholzer.

January 3, 2017 - AMP Media is launching an online customer satisfaction survey today to measure the awareness and impact of its public access and city government cable television production services among Monterey County residents.

The survey will run until February 15th and can be accessed from the AMP Media website at www.ampmedia.org/survey.

Cannery Row has installed new street signs as another distinct branding for the historic and picturesque shopping and dining district.

    Via Pariaso between Hermann and Via Gayuba; Pacific at Whispering Pines

    This project should last three weeks pending weather; no shower access will be available during this project.

    Work is expected to stop through Wednesday due to rain. Installation of the new 36” Monterey Pipeline on Fairgrounds Road will continue Thursday, weather depending. Construction on Fairgrounds Road will mostly take place in the parking lanes, allowing traffic to continue in both directions. Construction on Madison Street between Larkin and Van Buren in Monterey is also scheduled to resume Thursday. Detours onto Jefferson Street will be posted. Residents who live in the affected sections of Madison should check with contractors on site to make arrangements for driveway access during construction. Parking will be limited in areas where construction is taking place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Temporary water service interruptions will occur for residents in affected areas of Madison when water service lines are reconnected to the newly relocated water main. These interruptions are estimated to last between 30 to 45 minutes. Affected properties will be notified by door hangers. Crews will knock on doors to provide additional notice before interruptions take place.

    January 16 - January 20, depending on the weather, crews will continue working on the earth work, electrical work, and drainage work. Work will continue to be behind the concrete barriers and off the road way, and no daytime or nighttime closures are currently planned.
