Measure P Quick Facts

Measure P SignMeasure P was approved by 74% of voters in November, 2014. It authorized a 1% local district tax (sales and use tax) to be used “to address significant deferred maintenance by fixing streets, sidewalks, and potholes; improve related access and safety for senior citizens, disabled residents, and others; and repair its 100-year-old storm drain system to protect our beaches/Monterey Bay.”

When should it be collected?

The tax is effective from April 1, 2015 through March 31, 2019.

What is the total tax rate in the City of Monterey?
  • The California base sales and use tax rate is 7.25%
  • Measure P enacted a 1% sales tax
  • Monterey-Salinas Transit’s .125% district tax – for information about this tax, please contact MST directly
  • Measure X enacted a .375% Transportation Safety and Investment Plan sales tax  – for information about this tax, please contact TAMC directly
  • Effective April 1, 2017, City of Monterey total tax rate is 8.75%
